How To | Silk Thread and Bead Friendship Bracelet

These are cute little thread and bead friendship bracelets and they easy to make without any jewellery making tools, just a pair of scissors. They are perfect for layering up with other bracelets and make cute presents.

These are made by threading small sterling silver beads on to Griffin Silk Bead Cord. Griffin Bead Silk comes in many colours and has a needle attached which makes it easy to thread very small beads on and to make the closure for this bracelet by passing the cord twice through a small tube or bead.  This is  similiar to the knotted closure on these macrame bracelets. The beads I used were some little freeform sterling nugget beads, square tube bead and some little cylinder beads I made by cutting up a small piece of sterling silver tube with a saw.

Griffin Silk also comes in many sizes but use a thicker cord about 0.70mm (Size number 6) or up otherwise your bracelet is too thin. Alternatively if you have cord you want to use you could get a collapsible beading needle to thread on your beads.

You Will Need

Griffin Silk Bead Cord in size 0.70mm (size 6) or up

Small silver beads

x2 4mm rondelle beads

x1 4mm round bead (or small tube bead)

scissors

1. Unwind the silk thread from the card. Tie a knot in the end so the beads can’t slide off.

2. Thread on the 4mm rondelle bead, the round 4mm bead and the little tube beads.

3. Pass the silk thread back through the 4mm round bead in the opposite direction. This makes the closure for the bracelet.

4. Thread on the last rondelle bead. Check you can get your bracelet off and on your wrist. Tie a knot below the last rondelle bead. Use the needle to fray the thread below the 2 knots to make a tassel.

All finished. I would love to hear if you are thinking of making any of these.

Thank you for posting this! I want to make some this weekend for Christmas presents. Where did you buy the square tube beads? what size is the square closure bead?

      Hi Nicole,

I am glad you like the tutorial. The beads are made from sterling silver square tube that I bought from Cookson Gold in the UK. I used a jewellery saw to cut the tube to the size I wanted. To make the square bead closure bead I cut a piece of tube about 3cm long. I had a look and Karen Hill Tribe Silver do some square tube beads that look similar. They are 2mm wide so use some of the thicker silk thread so the bead can close the bracelet.

I hope that helps. I would love to hear how you get on.
